This Is Me: Black History Month

Posting date: 20/10/23

As part of our celebrations for Black History Month, Harriet and Carren share their journey of growing up Black. Watch below.

This Is Me by Harriet

“My name is Harriet Black. I work in the Financial Planning and Analysis team. I grew up in Derby, a city in the middle of Nottingham. It is a culturally diverse city. I am 5 ft8, and I've been 5 ft8 since I was about 12. And when I was at school, I had a big afro. So this tall loud black girl was a bit of an awkward thumb, and it was difficult to just kind of find out where I fit in. I don't feel like I'm that sore thumb anymore, which is fantastic. The most important thing in my life now is to make sure that the feeling of belonging is important to everyone, especially in the workplace, it makes everything so much easier.”

This Is Me by Carren

“My name is Carren. I'm a Private Shopping Manager and part of the Racial Equality and Diversity board at Harrods. For me, I was born in Italy to Ghanaian parents. I came to the UK when I was three years old. Being a black woman or growing up as a black girl is more than just a label for me. It's who I am, and how I see the world. I think being a black woman, sometimes it's funny because it's like my superpower because people are so intrigued to find out where you come from.”
